Foster Manager

Supervisor: Programs Director

Essential Job Functions include the following. Other duties may be assigned

  • Recruits and maintains a dynamic network of foster homes for shelter animals

  • Oversees the placement of animals into foster care based on their behavioral, medical, space, emergency needs, etc. 

  • Coordinates daily activities related to fostering, including foster appointments, health checks, animal pick-ups/returns, etc.

  • Observe and assess animal behavior and conduct animal meet and greets. Determine the best foster home based on animal behavior, breed, medical condition, etc.

  • Handle animals in a safe and humane manner. Walk and monitor dogs in play yards. Assist with holding animals for vaccines or medical tests.

  • Coordinate social media posts and email blasts in order to generate interest in hard-to-place animals.

  • Provide excellent customer service to foster parents, coworkers, volunteers, and shelter visitors.

  • Answer phone calls and email responses from potential foster parents in a prompt, professional and informative manner.

  • Call, email, and use social media to communicate with foster parents about available shelter animals and assist foster parents with animal selection.

  • Maintain positive relationships with foster parents

  • Handle all customers in a polite and professional manner

  • Maintain detailed, up-to-date records for all foster parents and foster animals.

  • Maintain accurate foster databases in PetPoint

  • Assist with providing care for animals going into foster care and currently in foster care 

  • Work closely and communicate with the foster program assistant

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Minimum of high school diploma and 1+ years experience in animal-related field.

  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to read and interpret policies and procedures. 

  • Must demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills; customer service oriented.

  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to multitask.

  • Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.

  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.

  • Must be able to administer vaccines and run medical tests needed for transport animals.

  • CAET is required within 1 year of employment 

  • Be safe and confident around all dog sizes and behaviors (i.e., fearful, aggressive, etc.)

  • Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and computerized format.

  • Ability to have a flexible schedule.

  • Ability to meet physical demands.

  • Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license. 

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED

Physical Demands: The work is performed in all areas of the shelter. Typical positions require workers to walk or stand for short to moderate periods; lift and carry up to 40 pounds, climb stairs, bend, reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects.

Offsite Adoption Events Coordinator

Division: Development

Reports To: Communications and Events Senior Manager

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate, plan and carry out off site adoption events. 

  • Provide the public with information about CAA. 

  • Counsel potential adopters about basic animal care, housing, and medical responsibilities as directed by Standard Operating Procedures and provided materials. 

  • Process off-site adoptions.

  • Transport animals to and from off-site events. 

  • Provide and supervise the care of animals at off-site events. 

Knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Work 20 - 30 hours per week, primarily on the weekends. 

  • Follow the mission of CAA.

  • Enjoy working with animals and have a genuine concern for their care and well-being.

  • Be familiar with all shelter Standard Operating Procedures and the Employee Manual.

  • Self-starter.

  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions and animal handling and behavior.

  • Be safe and confident around all dog sizes and cats. 

  • Ability to handle animals safely and with patience and gentleness.

  • Ability to represent CAA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.

  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within CAA, with volunteers, the public and be a team player.

Required Professional Licensing or Certifications:

High School Diploma or GED

Valid Louisiana State Driver’s License

Shelter Veterinary Clinic Manager

Division: Veterinary Staff

Reports To: Medical Director

Overview: 

The Clinic Manager assists and supports the planning, organization, direction, and the overall management, operation, and maintenance of Companion Animal Alliance’s Veterinary Care Department. The Clinic Manager oversees daily responsibilities of veterinary technicians, assistants, and volunteers in the clinic and intake. The Clinic Manager also is responsible for managing inventory and upkeep of supplies and medical equipment in the veterinary clinic.

Compensation based on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Directs and monitors all aspects of the constant humane treatment and handling of sheltered animals within intake and the clinic in accordance with CAA policy.

  • Supervise activities of veterinary staff and volunteers, including, but not limited to, the creation of the staff schedule, timecard approvals, and delegation of daily tasks both for intake and clinic needs.

  • Lead daily activities including animal processing, surgical prep, medication administration to the general animal population, and inventory management.

  • Monitors all aspects of veterinary care including cleanliness, temporary housing, flow, and efficiency.

  • Under supervision of the Medical Director, leads group discussions on plans/updates of animals being treated within the veterinary clinic. Guide staff through the discussion of animals for adoption, euthanasia, or transport when necessary.

  • Ensure expedited movement through animal pathways by managing prompt completion of exams, surgery, and other aspects of veterinary care necessary to complete all pre-adoption requirements.

  • In conjunction with the Programs and Operational teams, and all essential staff, Identify animals that need specialized care and ensure their needs are met.

  • Assist in the hiring of new staff which includes reviewing applications, interviewing applicants, hiring, onboarding and training of new staff.

  • Ensures the clinic and intake remains well maintained.

  • Monitors daily activity of intake and the clinic.

  • Contributes to the population by promoting positive outcomes through appropriate and prompt medical care as well as through contributions as a Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician.

  • Manages foster/post-adoption appointments including but not limited to surgery scheduling, sick appointments, and rechecks.

Knowledge and skills required:

  • Follow the mission of CAA.

  • Thorough knowledge of business principles, practices and techniques used in veterinary clinic management.

  • Knowledge of principles of personnel management and ability to plan, direct, and coordinate the work of others through subordinates.

  • Be familiar with all shelter Standard Operating Procedures and the Employee Manual.

  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions and animal handling and behavior.

  • Knowledge of industry best practices.

  • Ability to represent CAA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.

  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within CAA, with volunteers, the public and be a team player.

  • Ability to work with a diversified group of individuals.

  • Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and computerized format.

  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.

  • Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.

  • Maintain active CAET license.

  • Minimum 1-2 years animal shelter experience.

  • Minimum 1-2 years of management/supervisor experience.

  • 2-4 years of veterinary field experience.

  • RVT/CVPM licensure preferred but not required.

    Emotional and mental requirements:

  • Perform well under stress. Level-headed under pressure and can help reduce stress in staff when challenges arise.

  • Able to stay focused in a busy multi-task environment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to handle sensitive and difficult issues in a confidential manner.

  • Able to maintain focus and composure when exposed to emotionally taxing scenarios like abuse/neglect.

  • Open minded, receptive to a wide variety of viewpoints, information and ideas.

Physical requirements:

The work is performed in the veterinary clinic, intake exam rooms, animal housing areas, and shelter surroundings. Typical position requires workers to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry up to 50 pounds; climb stairs, bend, reach, hold, grasp and turn objects.
