Adoption FAQs
What are your adoption fees?
Dogs over 25 lbs/6 months: $100
Dogs under 25 lbs/6 months: $200
Cats over 6 months: $25
Cats/Kittens under 6 months: $50
Why does CAA have adoption fees?
Nearly 10,000 animals come through our doors every year. Some are found as strays or are surrendered by owners who can no longer care for them. Others may have been rescued from abandonment or cruelty cases. No matter how they got here, each and every one is loved, cared for, and attended to at Companion Animal Alliance. Whether it’s individualized medical treatment, behavioral intervention, or treats, food, and shelter, our adoption fees help offset these costs.
What medical care do animals receive before adoption?
All animals are dewormed and given age-appropriate vaccinations upon entering our shelter. Prior to adoption each animal is spayed/neutered, microchipped, and given flea/heartworm prevention. Cats receive a FELV/FIV combo test, and dogs over 6 months of age receive a heartworm test. We do not currently have the ability to treat heartworms for our adopted animals.
What should I bring?
Your ID, a form of payment for your adoption fee, and a way to secure your new animal!
Dogs must leave on a leash, and cats must leave in a carrier. If you do not have these available, CAA has some available for purchase in our retail store!
Do you ever do adoption specials?
We have two discounted adoption specials:
Senior for Senior: Senior citizens over the age of 60 may receive a 50% discount when adopting an animal over the age of 6.
Military Discount: All active members of the military and veterans will have their adoption fee waived with proof of service (no more than 2 adoption fees waived).
We regularly have waived or reduced fee adoption events! Stay tuned on our social media to see our upcoming discounted adoption specials.
Do you ever bring your adoptable animals to other places?
We frequently schedule offsite adoption events in the Baton Rouge area so that everyone can get a chance to view our pets!
Visit the Event Calendar, follow us on social media, or subscribe to our newsletter to stay in the know.
Can I bring my dog for a meet-and-greet before I adopt?
Yes. We absolutely encourage your current pet to meet your potential new family member. When you arrive, please ask a member of our Client Care team to assist you.
Note: We are not able to do cat meet and greets. This applies to both our cat with your pet and your cat meeting with our pets.
What if I met an animal I like, but am unsure if I'm ready to commit to?
If you’re unsure about an animal being a perfect fit try our "Pawdition" option in which you can bring an animal home for up to two weeks to ensure they’re the right fit for your home. If they’re not the right fit for your home, you can bring them back within that two-week period (no intake appointment necessary) and select a different animal that may better fit your home.
Do I have to live in East Baton Rouge Parish to adopt?
No. You can be from anywhere, but you do have to be at our shelter in person to complete our adoption process. We do not offer online adoptions. Additionally, adopters are solely responsible for any documentation, health certificates, or check-ups necessary for where they live or for interstate travel. Lastly, for health and safety purposes we are not able to “ship” animals.
Can CAA animals become ESA or Service animals?
Absolutely! Adopters can take time to do the training and paperwork necessary, however, CAA is unable to complete or sign any paperwork pertaining to this and would recommend getting in touch with your private veterinarian.
Do you offer information and resources to help first-time pet owners?
Yes! At CAA, we understand that adopting a pet for the first time can be an adventure! In order to set our adopters up for success, we offer tools for pet owners and are always available via email at adopt@caabr.org.
