Foster Assitant Summary

The foster assistant collaborates with the foster manager to help manage the foster program, which includes foster animals and their caregivers.

Essential Job Functions: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Maintain foster parent and animal information through data entry and file organization

  • Assist with foster appointments at the request of the foster manager

  • Manage foster applications

  • Communicate with foster parents via email and in person

  • Monitor our animal database for the arrival of neonatal animals

  • Check-in with foster parents weekly 

  • Update animal pictures and biography information through Adopt-A-Pet and Petfinder

  • Schedule out medication for foster animals 

  • Send out prevention and vaccination reminders to foster parents

  • Assist the foster manager with assessing animals added to the needs foster list 

  • Archive inactive foster parents in our volunteer database

  • Send out callouts to foster parents as requested by the foster manager

  • Handle all volunteers in a polite and professional manner

  • Handle animals in a safe and humane manner. 

  • Assist in holding animals for vaccines or medical tests

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Minimum of high school diploma and 1+ years experience in animal-related field.

  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to read and interpret policies and procedures. 

  • Must demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills; customer service oriented.

  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to multitask.

  • Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.

  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.

  • Must be able to administer vaccines and run medical tests needed for foster animals.

  • Be safe and confident around all dog sizes and behaviors (i.e., fearful, aggressive, etc.)

  • Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and computerized format.

  • Ability to have a flexible schedule.

  • Ability to meet physical demands.

  • Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license. 

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED

Physical Demands: The work is performed in all areas of the shelter. Typical positions require workers to walk or stand for short to moderate periods; lift and carry up to 40 pounds, climb stairs, bend, reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects.

This is a part-time position 30 hours a week, Wednesday - Sunday
