Executive Director, Companion Animal Alliance

Responsibilities 

The Executive Director for CAA is responsible for developing/directing all programs, activities and operations necessary to advance the mission, vision, and core values of CAA. Specific responsibilities include:

 Administration 

  • Directs hiring, training, performance reviews and general management of all staff. 

  • Defines and communicates to direct reports their roles, responsibilities and accountability, i.e. departmental budgets and staffing levels; adherence to employment policies and practices, etc. 

  • Provides day-to-day supervision of direct reports. 

  • Ensures compliance with all state and federal employment regulations and laws and regulations related to animal welfare and shelter operations. 

  • Oversees the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures manual, employee handbook, staff orientation, emergency evacuation and disaster management plans, and other necessary documents.

  • Updates and improves policies and procedures based on best practices from ASCPA, HSUS, Association of Shelter Veterinary Medicine, and other nationally recognized animal welfare organizations. 

 Shelter Operations/Organizational Development

  • Develops an organizational structure and oversees implementation of a budget/plan for managing the day-to-day activities of the shelter. 

  • Oversees the care, handling, and well-being of animals from animal intake through adoptions.

  • Works with staff to evaluate each animal and oversees decisions regarding adoption, transfer, foster or euthanasia. 

  • Oversees upkeep, maintenance/repair of facilities/equipment. 

  • Implements systems/programs for staff development and training. 

  • Ensures that an active and effective volunteer recruitment, development and recognition program is ongoing. 

  • Establishes and implements policies and procedures with the approval of the Board of Directors. 

  • Approves employee schedules and reviews/approves payroll and leave time. Ensures maintenance of personnel files.

  • Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with EBR Parish Animal Control Director and staff. 

  • Create and implement a disaster plan in conjunction with Department of Agriculture and EBR Parish officials.

Financial Management/Legal

  • Assumes financial responsibility of the organization in collaboration with the Board of Directors 

  • Implements internal financial controls (including cash receipt and disbursement policies) as directed by the City-Parish Finance Department and ensures staff compliance. 

  • With Board, develops yearly operating budget. 

 Board Reporting/Assistance

  • Attend Board Meetings and assist in the planning/implementation of meetings of the Board of Directors/committees. 

  • Provide monthly reports to the Board and immediate notification of significant issues to the Board Chair.

Development/Fundraising

  • Leads all development and fundraising activities in conjunction with the Board of Directors.

 Community Development, Marketing and Public Relations

  • Works with staff to develop marketing, media and public relations materials and activities.

  • Works with other rescue organizations to strengthen and enlarge programs through exchange of information/collaborative efforts. 

  • Develops relationships with community leaders to ensure support for the mission of the shelter. 

  • Works with the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and specifically with the Shelter Management program to advance care for CAA animals and the field of Shelter Medicine.
